This engagement session made the DIA (Detroit Institute of Arts) one of my favorite places to take photos at. The clean backdrops of the stunning marble building paired with the golden hour light just gives me joy. We started right at the iconic front of the building, basking in that gorgeous golden light as the sun began to set. The couple was relaxed and natural, which made it super easy to find those candid moments. You know the ones where the couple simply forgets the camera is around? Those are my favorite!
After soaking in the beauty there, we wandered around the DIA to explore different spots for their engagement photos. The angles and shadows created such dynamic compositions, and I love how the couple’s laughter really brought everything to life. You could feel the connection between them in every shot — real colors shining through in editing paired with a fun blend of candid and posed movements.
Next up, we decided to head over to the train station for a little architectural flair. Have you seen that place? It’s stunning! With the golden hour light touching everything, we managed to create some romantic images that truly captured the essence of their love story. The way the light hit the angles of the building was mesmerizing, adding depth and movement to the photos.
But we didn’t stop there!
The grand finale spot was really special. It’s where the couple shared their first date down by the Detroit River, close to Belle Isle. It was blue hour, and WOW, did it deliver! Those deep shades of blue that swept across the sky and reflected off the water were just the cherry on top. Honestly, it made the whole evening feel intimate and cozy, like this little secret that only they shared.
By the end of the shoot, I felt like we had captured not just photos, but real moments that told their story. Each image showcased their love in this electric, vibrant way that only Detroit can give. It was all about preserving real colors, direction in posing, and those lovely candid interactions that make each session unique. Every time I pull together a session like this, it reminds me how amazing it is to document such meaningful moments. Especially in our own beautiful Michigan!
