I’ve photographed many spring family photos over the years, but it’s always a joy to catch up with Kaitlyn and Scotty. We’ve been on this amazing ride together for a few years now! Starting from their wedding (which they had to postpone—life has its surprises, right?) to capturing their engagement, maternity, and now their third family photoshoot! This time, Kaitlyn had her heart set on some gorgeous spring blossoms. Because I’m an above-and-beyond photographer, off I went on a little adventure around Grand Rapids, scouting out the best spots. After sending her a few options, we decided on this stunning area filled with magnolias in full bloom. The catch? It’s right off a parking lot! But hey, good photographers can make any location shine, even a hidden gem like that.
These spring family photos are especially sweet because they brought along their newest little one, and let me tell you, wrangling little kiddos can be a bit of an ordeal! Despite a few hiccups, I focused on capturing those genuine expressions, playing games and tossing in some laughter to get those beautiful smiles. One of my favorite parts was the wardrobe—the first outfit was all about soft spring pastels that blended perfectly, but the second look was a bold all-denim ensemble for everyone. I absolutely loved how the blues popped against the pinks of the blossoms! It’s moments like this, filled with real colors, direction, and movement, that really bring the fun to a shoot. It just reminds me of why I love what I do. Documenting these candid moments and milestones for families sure fill my cup.
If you know me, I rave about the beautiful, wild West often. It’s definitely shoots like this one that remind me of the love I have for the different Michigan seasons. This is the state where I learned photography and where I practiced everything I’ve learned. In my roots, I’ll always be a Michigan photographer. Just maybe one that works in the mountains.
