In my years of photographing weddings in Michigan, I’ve had my share of working rainy day weddings and my biggest advice to my couples is this: instead of portraying disappointment in your photos, try embracing that rain on your wedding day. There’s a popular saying that goes, “rain on your wedding day is good luck — because a knot that becomes wet is harder to undo.” That sentiment couldn’t have been more fitting for this heartfelt wedding at South Haven Creations.
This day belonged to an older couple — two people who’ve already lived full chapters of life and chose to step into this new one with intentionality, joy, and the kind of deep-rooted love that doesn’t rattle easily. Their celebration was a true reflection of who they are: grounded, vibrant, and full of life.
The theme of the day was wildflowers. Playful, colorful, and beautifully untamed. It wasn’t just in the bouquets or the centerpieces (though those were stunning). Wildflower motifs appeared in everything from the signage to the groomsmen’s socks. Every detail felt like a little love letter to the bride’s connection with nature.
And then came the rain.
Not a brief drizzle, but a steady patter that settled in for most of the day. Yes, including during their outdoor ceremony. But rather than scrambling or stressing, the couple embraced it. Guests cozied up under shared umbrellas, shoulder to shoulder, smiling through the mist as vows were exchanged beneath a soft canopy of clouds. What could have been viewed as an obstacle turned into one of the most intimate parts of the day.
My work isn’t about perfect poses or pristine weather.
It’s about real color, real emotion, and the beautifully unscripted. I photograph with movement, heart, and honesty, because life doesn’t wait for the clouds to clear, and love doesn’t need sunshine to be radiant.
This couple didn’t just plan a wedding. They created an experience. And it was a privilege to capture it all — wet shoes, wildflowers, and all.
