I work with families often, and here are some family photoshoot tips to try especially when you’ve got little ones involved! I’ve been photographing Kate and Eric for a few years now. From their anniversary, maternity, and now the second family session they’ve done with me! This most recent one turned out to be nothing short of delightful chaos, and it made me think about how to make these sessions not just bearable for the little ones, but actually fun! You know how kids can be—they’ve got their own agenda. Trying to force them into a posed smile is like trying to catch smoke with your bare hands. Instead, I’ve learned that the secret sauce for capturing the best family moments is to let the kids run the show.
When those little ones are running around being their mischievous selves, that’s when the magic happens. Trust me! Some of my favorite shots have come from those unpredictable moments when kids are mid-tantrum or caught in a silly face. Parents often laugh and say they love those “real” moments just as much, if not more, than the traditional posed ones. That’s why I like to kick things off with a few quick posed shots while the kids are still in a good mood. I encourage you to have snacks at the ready for some bribing. That way, we can grab those nicely framed smiles before they decide it’s time to channel their inner tornado.
Once the formalities are out of the way, I love getting creative and encouraging playful interactions. Think games! Simple things like “Simon Says”. Tickle parties always get the giggles out. I also pull out “ring around the rosy” and tag in a circle. Parents, I always tell you to keep your smiles at the ready—let those little ones see you enjoying the moment. That playful energy is infectious and contagious!
Remember, it’s all about making it feel like a special family time, not just another task on the to-do list. With a little direction and encouragement, everyone can truly let loose, and that’s when you capture those beautiful, real colors of a family—the movement, laughter, and fun. So next time you’re gearing up for a shoot with the kiddos, just embrace the chaos. You’ll end up with not just photos but cherished memories that reflect the joy and personality of your family!
