I get super pumped every time I get to photograph engagement photos in Chicago, and this last couple was an absolute delight. They were a bit nervous initially, admitting they needed some guidance, which is totally fine. I love having those conversations because it gives me a chance to explain my approach and make them feel more comfortable. Communication is key!
So, here’s how I kick things off: I start with some interaction between them. It’s the best way for them to relax and just enjoy each other’s company, rather than feeling like they’re in front of a camera. After that, I steer things a bit more toward posed shots. But, I always make sure they’re still living in the moment—laughing, talking, and just being themselves. As we went along, I introduced playful prompts that got them moving and interacting even more, which is when the magic really happens. Those candid moments filled with laughter and joy? That’s when I know we’re hitting the sweet spot!

We kicked off the session at the iconic Wrigley Building, which is such a great backdrop. Seriously, the history and architecture of Chicago never gets old! Then we made our way to my absolute favorite spot — North Ave Beach. The skyline from there is unbeatable. We just happened to be there during golden hour, which made everything glow in this beautiful warm light. And can you believe it? This couple was all in when it came to having fun, even splashing around in the water without a care in the world! The sunset was spectacular, displaying this gorgeous red-orange hue that just added to the vibe of the day. Once the sun dipped below the horizon, it was a no-brainer to capture some shots of the skyline all lit up during blue hour.
Working with couples like this one is such a reminder of why I love capturing engagement sessions in Chicago. That paired with real colors in editing, joy in the present, and genuine connection all woven together in the perfect moments. There’s just something about combining a beautiful city with a playful couple that makes for a fun and unforgettable shoot!
