My Approach for Extended Families

It’s not too often that I get to work with extended families, but when I do, here’s my approach! One of my favorite families to work with, Chloe and Joe’s families, had me take some extended family photos last fall. I’ve been lucky enough to hang out with them during so many different milestones that it feels like we’re best friends at this point. We’ve gone from their engagement to their rehearsal dinner, their wedding, and even Chloe’s boudoir shoot. They’ve welcomed one handsome little baby since then (with one more on the way), and I’ve captured both of their maternity sessions, plus a couple of family shoots. But let me tell you, this extended family photoshoot we did last fall from Joe’s side? I’m absolutely obsessed with how it turned out.

As for the location,

they chose one of my favorite spots in Grand Rapids, which is just a dream in the fall. The way the sunlight filters through those rows of trees creates this magical glow that makes everything look so perfect. I also love this spot because in addition to the trees, there are open fields that bless us with stunning rolling hills as a backdrop.

For extended family shoots, I usually have this go-to list of groupings to keep things organized and to make sure we don’t miss anyone. I kick things off with a few classic shots. Formals of everyone looking their sharpest, whether it’s full body or waist-up. After getting the formals out of the way, we get into some more candid stuff. There’s nothing like those fun, spontaneous moments when everyone is just being themselves, laughing, and enjoying each other’s company.

My approach when I’m shooting smaller groups within an extended family session, like siblings or just immediate families, I like to mix in some playful poses to showcase their personalities. And let’s not forget about the little ones! I try to get some laughs for individual photos of them first. Then also some silly facial expressions! If I get a cranky small child, I typically capture those cranky faces, too! I’ll end the session by offering to get some headshots or solo photos for the grownups who want them.

Immediate family photos are usually mostly formals. But for me, it’s all about capturing the realness of their relationships and the authenticity of the kiddos. This is why I adore my job. Working with Chloe and Joe (and literally all their friends and families) makes it even more special.

Overdue for extended family photos?

Most extended families will split the cost between each family set, making it more affordable!
