When it comes to summer family photos ideas, there’s something truly special about photographing a family on their own land. Especially when that land holds generations of stories. This session took place just outside of Grand Rapids, Michigan, on the family’s farm, and it was the perfect setting for a laughter-filled, playful evening together.
We planned this session around golden hour, when the light softens and everything feels a little more magical. Timing like this is key because it allows me to lean into natural light and thoughtful composition, so the images not only feel candid and alive, but also beautifully balanced and timeless.
As a photographer, I don’t expect kids to sit still or behave perfectly. In fact, I welcome the chaos. Rowdy toddlers? That’s my sweet spot. I photograph with movement at the center of everything I do, and sessions like this one are a perfect example. We ran through fields, let them roughhouse, and played games. Rather than directing every second, I guided gently to create space for connection, laughter, and real emotion to unfold. It was truly a full hour of uninterrupted family time for them.
The result? A gallery full of images that feel just like the evening did: honest, joyful, and a little wild, but in the best way.
If you’re looking for summer family photos ideas that feel natural, unposed, and full of personality, consider starting with a location that already means something to you. Pair it with golden hour and a photographer who’s not afraid to get on the ground (literally) with your littles, and you’ll have more than just photos. You’ll have artful memories that reflect your family’s dynamic just as it is.
Ready to plan your own magic hour session? I’d love to be part of it.
