My favorite locations in West Michigan for engagement shoots:
I’ve been shooting in West Michigan for over a decade, so I’m sharing some of my favorite locations for engagement photoshoots in my neck of the woods. I do quite a bit of traveling now but these spots in my hometown will always have a place in my heart. These are public areas and parks that don’t require permits or fees to shoot at (for now). They’re places I learned and honed my craft. Memories with people who trusted 17-year-old Phern. Moments of incredible pride AND regret. Places where I created my best work. I hope you take care of these locations and make some kick-ass art with some really cool people!

Honestly, the perfect mix of woodsy and beachy. It’s a little hike to get to the water if you start in the woods, so be prepared to sweat if you’re hoping for a mid-July photoshoot. You can always get back in your car and drive to the lakeshore!
millenium park in walker
The beach side of this huge park on the West side of Grand Rapids! My favorite time to shoot engagement sessions in this West Michigan location is during golden hour in July and August when wildflowers are in bloom.

BIG fave for fall shoots – both North AND South locations! Plenty of trees that peak at different times, so you can always find a slice of fall from the earliest the leaves turn, all the way to beginning/mid November. This suspension bridge is a gem, but it does get quite a bit of foot traffic, so be ready to be super speedy in between shots. Or, I mean, you can also lose your mind editing all the people out in post. LOL.

This one is probably my most used location in west Michigan, especially for family shoots, but it’s one of my go-tos for couples, too. The engagement sample below was in November. I included a couple samples of a summer shoot I did with this cutie family to show you different seasons. This spot is an extension of Millenium park and is just across the street from that entrance.

This spot is so nice to have in my back pocket for weddings that happen downtown GR. It’s nestled in the heart of the city and offers city park vibes, eclectic urban, AND old money classy aesthetics. My favorite time of year to shoot engagements and couples here is during the spring, when the surrounding trees are in full bloom!
